Cape Verde head coach Bubista has made it clear that his team will not be intimidated by Lionel Messi or defending champions Argentina as they prepare for their historic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 showdown.
Speaking ahead of the match, Bubista said his players have earned their place in the knockout stage through hard work and determination. While he acknowledged the quality of Argentina and the brilliance of Messi, he insisted his team will not change its identity.
"We respect Argentina and Lionel Messi, but we also deserve respect," Bubista said. "We are not coming here just to admire them. We are here to compete."
The Cape Verde coach emphasized that his side has no special plan focused only on stopping Messi. Instead, his players are preparing to face Argentina as a complete team.
"Argentina has many great players. If we only think about Messi, we forget the rest of the team. Our focus is on playing our football with discipline, courage, and confidence."
Cape Verde has been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament debutants reached the Round of 32 after impressive performances against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, proving they can compete with some of the world's strongest nations.
Despite being considered underdogs, Bubista believes anything is possible in knockout football.
"We have already shown what we are capable of. We dream of going even further, and we will fight until the final whistle."
Argentina, meanwhile, enters the match as one of the tournament favorites after winning all three of their group-stage matches. Coach Lionel Scaloni has also praised Cape Verde, warning that they are a well-organized and dangerous team that deserves respect.
The highly anticipated encounter promises to be a fascinating battle between the reigning world champions and one of the tournament's biggest Cinderella stories, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.
