Major League Soccer has opened a formal investigation into Inter Miami CF over allegations of improper contact during the club’s pursuit of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

The investigation follows a complaint submitted by the LA Galaxy, who reportedly held Casemiro’s MLS “discovery rights” at the time Inter Miami began negotiations with the player. Under league regulations, a club holding a player’s discovery rights may be entitled to compensation before another MLS team can complete a signing.

Inter Miami and the Galaxy have since reached an agreement that clears the way for Casemiro’s proposed 2027 contract to move forward. However, that settlement does not bring the matter to a complete close.

MLS officials are now examining whether Inter Miami or its representatives contacted Casemiro before formally acquiring his discovery rights from the Galaxy. Any unauthorized approach could constitute tampering under league rules.

The review is expected to focus on the timeline of discussions, the individuals involved and whether meaningful contract negotiations took place without the Galaxy’s permission. Depending on the league’s findings, Inter Miami could face disciplinary action, including a fine, financial compensation or other sanctions.

For now, Casemiro’s move is expected to proceed, but the investigation adds another layer of scrutiny to one of the league’s most high-profile signings. Neither the investigation nor the allegations themselves establish wrongdoing, and MLS has yet to announce a final decision.
